I noticed that at the end of the movie, both Samantha Reardon and Nancy Gordon died. I was pretty sure they had survived in the book. Today, I was at the mall picking up some last minute stuff for my vacation, and when I passed the book store, I decided to see if it had a copy of "Gone But Not Forgotten", where I could verify this information. (Of course, you'd never guess today that this store has anything not connected to Harry Potter.)

After discovering that Borders Express (new name for Waldenbooks and Brentano's in some parts of the country) puts Steve Martini's books under Mystery and your books under Fiction & Literature, I found the book. And, indeed, not only were Samantha Reardon and Nancy Gordon alive at the end (although Reardon was probably headed for a civil commitment), Martin Darius was linked to the death of Oberhurst and would be facing trial and probably the death penalty for this killing. In the movie, no connection is ever made, and Darius ends up hospitalized, probably for life, as a result of being paralyzed by Reardon.

I liked the book's ending a lot better. I realize that the very end of the book, at Colby's swearing-in, would have been anti-climactic for the movie, so when I compare the book's ending to that of the movie, I am comparing the part of the book that takes place in the courthouse.

Dear rslitman: I thought they did a good job on the movie but there were a few things I did in the book that they changed that I liked better the way I handled them. It was a good job overall though. Phil

I've read of PM's books, but Gone But Not Forgotten is by far my favorite so far. I was excited to hear a movie was made of this book, I will definately be on the lookout for it!

Happy reading all!

Linda

Dear Linda: "Gone" stars Brooke Shields and it shows on the Lifetime network from time to time. It's four hours and available on DVD, so you can rent it. Let me know what you think of the movie version. Phil

Gone But Not Fogotten was the first Margolin book I read (and reread several times). I finally saw the movie and must say I was disappointed. I believe they cut up the story in the name of budgets. A much better job could have been done with the material. Hope it gets remade for the Big Screen and done right.

PaladinNJ: I thought they did a decent job with the movie. I'd give it a B+. It helped that it was four hours because they didn't have to cut as much of the book as they would if it was the normal two hour length. Phil
